An Old Family Cemetery
Washington Family Cemetery, Ottawa Co., Oklahoma.
Photos by John Schehrer, Mar. 2007
This early day cemetery was the burial ground of the Washington Family who lived east of Fairland and near what is now an arm of the lake.  This cemetery was discovered by new owners of the land where it is located.  The cemetery was in terrible condition when found and the owners became interested in it and decided to clean it up  and have done a wonderful job of restoration.
Washington Family Cemetery consists of about a dozen marked graves.  All or nearly all are Washington family members.  It appears that this family were Delaware Indians.  An obituary was found for Frank Washington and it indicated that the family was Delaware and well known in the Fairland area.  The latest date that I saw on a stone was 1899.
Iron fences surround the graves of three Washington infants.  The large tree on the left has grown around part of the fence.
Grave of Susannah Washington,
1891-1895.  Most of the graves in this cemetery are those of infants.  Several of the stones are broken and illegible.
Grave marker of George Washington who died 24 Oct. 1892 at 77 yr.  He is the oldest person interred at this cemetery.  This large stone has toppled from it's base and the owners would like to get it back up. There are several broken unidentified stones in the cemetery.

Update:  I have been informed that George Washington was a Delaware Indian and his name was Neetamooqua.  In 1853 he became a scout for Col. John C. Freemont, and the name George Washington was given to him by Col Fremont.  He kept the name for the rest of his life and all of his children carried the name, too.  Julia Washington was the daughter of George Washington and she married John Shawnee.  Their infant son is buried at the cemetery.  Julia married William Hall after the death of John Shawnee and she is buried at Fairland Cemetery.
