Picher, Oklahoma Mining District
Abandoned Mines
* Photos by John Schehrer *
Piles of waste rock surround the old Black Hawk mine derrick at Picher, Oklahoma.
Field shaft derrick of the St. Louis number 4 mine near Baxter Springs, Kansas.  Shafts 200 to 300 feet deep were found under these derricks.  This field had been burned off but the old structure was not affected.  This color photo from about 1967.

This old mine derrick was located at the Wilbur mine, near Treece, Kansas.  The cement pillars once supported the jigs in the mill at this site.  All of these old structures have now succumbed to the elements and are gone forever.  Now, I am able to show some of these structures in rare color photos.
