Ghosts of Times Past
Remnants of the Mining Days
in the Picher, Oklahoma Mining District
Photos by John Schehrer
A Prairie Sentinel, this old abandoned steel mine derrick towers over the land.  This is the Goodeagle number 2 field shaft north of Commerce, Oklahoma.  The picture was taken in the 1960s and is one of the few color photos from that period.
A view of Picher, Oklahoma's Main Street as it looked in September 2009.  This once bustling area of town is now deserted and the buildings are slowly disappearing.  By 2012 all of this was bulldozed and hauled away.
Old Indian graves are found next to this tailing and rock dump from this old mine near Spring River.
