Picher, Oklahoma
Mines and Mills
Photos taken by John Schehrer
Before the Eagle-Picher Central Mill was built, each mine had it's own concentrating plant.  This mill at Cardin was the Barbara J. and is an example of one of the earlier mills.  This mill was the last of it's type and operated as late as the 1960s.  The mine derrick is visible behind the mill.
When the Eagle-Picher Central Mill closed down there was no place for the independent miners to take their ore to be refined and a small number of tiny mills were built, but it was a losing battle and the mining in the Picher district ended about 1970.
