Picher, Oklahoma
More views of the mining town.
Connell Avenue in Picher, Oklahoma

This view, which was taken July 27, 1924, is part of a larger picture and shows the businesses along Connell Avenue.  The giant chat piles behind the water tower are from the Bingham and Whitebird mills and are bisected by A street.  This picture was taken from the Premier mill chat pile and others in this collection are taken from the Bingham.  These big chat piles will give some idea of the amount of material that is mined out under Picher.  In the distance is Blue Mound, which is in Kansas.  It was a time like no other and one that will never be seen again.  Picher was a town without equal in the mining days.

Picher as it looked in 1932

This view of Picher was taken from about the same place as the earlier picture above.  The town is surrounded by giant chat piles that threaten to overwhelm it.  In some areas, buildings had to be moved to make room for the chat.  This is looking north from a chat pile in the south end of town.  Main Street is on the left, Connell is on the right.  Blue Mound is visible in the upper right.  A large pond is at the foot of the chat pile.  Mining had peaked by this time.  Some of the tailings elevators are now gone from the chat piles.
