Miner's houses in Picher during the 1920s. Most of these shacks did not have electricity, running water, or sewers. Some of these buildings are still standing at Picher today. They are a few reminders of the early days when mining was the number one industry.
This one room shack at Hockerville was not much bigger than this guy's truck. Trash was just tossed out in the yard at some of these places. This house was frame construction with slats nailed over the cracks between the boards.

Large families sometimes lived in these one room shanties and there was a complete lack of modern conveniences. Note the water barrel in front of the house and the tub to collect rainwater.
