In 2018 I discovered this old shell of a house back in the overgrowth along a residential street in Picher. All other houses in the town were gone but about 5 or 6 crumbling structures. The old house has been vandalized and contains only trash from earlier occupants. It has almost been buried in brush growing around it. I found a picture of it taken back in 1916 when Picher was a new town.
This picture is part of a yard long photo of Picher taken in November 1916. It shows an area in southwest Picher and the house is part of a group of 6 identical houses in a row at the center of the picture. The house is located above the "6" in 1916 and is the northern most of the 6 houses. The first 5 houses had a pyramid shaped roof and this one has a flat area along the peak. All 6 had brick chimneys and a coal or wood stove at the center. In the first picture, taken in 2018, the chimney is gone and the porch has fallen off.
The town was only about 2 years old when this was taken. No trees are visible. Only a couple of drill rigs can be seen in the distance. In the original yard long picture there are a couple of big mills near A Street and Connell Ave.
