Mining Days at Commerce, Oklahoma.
New mines dot the prairie at Commerce, Oklahoma about 1910.  Underground mining of lead and zinc started here about 10 years before ore was discovered at Picher.
Hauling Jack from the mines

This view was taken at Miami, Oklahoma in 1910 and shows a line of horse drawn ore wagons hauling jack.  This view is looking west on Central Ave toward Main Street.  The old opera house is visible in the distance.  They must have been hauling the ore to the railroad to be hauled out since they are headed east on Central Ave.
A primitive mine and small mill stands next to the unit shown above.  This small outfit is similar to those used in the Joplin district and may have been moved from there to this location near Commerce, Oklahoma.
