Cardin's Final Days
 Photos by John Schehrer
The Superfund buyout of homes in the towns polluted by heavy metals and the danger of collapse of underground mines spelled the doom for the towns of Picher and Cardin, Oklahoma.  The towns are no longer incorporated and are now uninhabited ghost towns. Here are photos from those towns.
An empty main street lined by crumbling old buildings bears mute testimony to the mining town of yesterday.  Very soon all of this will be gone and only a memory.
This empty street lined with abandoned houses is a sad reminder of a once great place.
