A Picher, Oklahoma Salvage Yard
Photos by John Schehrer
During the days before mining ended, Picher was one of the best places around to find junk stores and places selling used goods.  One of the greatest of all places was Leo Horn's auto salvage business which was located west of the Bird Dog Mill about a mile and one half west of Picher.  This place was loaded with old vehicles from the 20s, 30s, and 40s.
Old cars from the 1930s and 1940s sit rusting away in this field.  At the end, these old vehicles were sold during a giant auction in the late 1960s.  These two photos were taken during the time of that auction.  It was a cloudy day and many of these vehicles sold for $15 to $20 each.  I remember seeing a Pierce Arrow there and many other names that had long been discontiued.  There is not a sign of this place remaining today.
